What to do in Taiwan with long lay over. If you have more than 10 hours to kill before your next flight. Here’s some free things to do while in Taipei.
Before anything else, just search if you’re one of the country that needs visa to be able to go out. If you don’t need, the your good to go. When you arrived in Taiwan, just go ahead to immigration and they might ask for the connecting flight. Here’s a reference link to check if you need visa to entry Taiwan.
I asked the service center at the airport for the free tour. Though she gave me options, the free tour will go to temples and not the popular spots. So either I go with the free tour, or just go to Taipei on my own, to be able to see the popular spots with a short time. I decided to go on my own.
I exchanged some dollars for Taipei currency. And bought my one way ticket to Taipei that looks like a token. The travel time is like 30 mins from the Airport to Taipei city.
First thing first, a map and some places to visit. and bought a 1 day pass for subway.
Went to Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Museum first for the changing of the guards which start at 9 am, and every hour. I think it lasted 15 mins.
Then just took a picture of the place, but didn’t go to the inside of the museums.
Then time for some hike to Elephant Hill Park, to see the views of the Taipei city and the Taipei 101. I don’t know how many stairs there is, but all I know I got tired.
Finally, reached the top and took some pictures, unfortunately it’s cloudy but I’m glad it didn’t rain.
Time to go down and visit Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall. Subways are not that difficult to understand, as long as you know what line to go you’ll be fine.
Now time for some lunch, decided to try their rice noodles, since it’s kinda cold and I want some hot soup. Went to Ximen station and just walk to the “Harijuku of Taipei” which is the Ximending area. A lot of food and bubble tea to try, and shop for some clothes.
Ay-Chung Flour Rice Noodles is a mee sua with some tender pork intestines. It is flavorful but you can still add some chili oil, garlic, and black vinegar. It’s mild spicy but so good, I can literally eat another bowl. So glad I tried this one.
Also craving for a bubble tea, but the queue is so long, so just went to other store, which has discount, and still good.
After some food, time to visit the last place before going back to airport. Just visited one temple which is the Dalongdong Bao’an Temple.
And that’s how I spent my 8 hours in Taipei. And had enough time before my flight.
