Free Things to do in Melbourne City
If you only have limited time to explore the city and don’t want to spend that much? Here are the free things to do in Melbourne City for only a day or two.
The best location to stay in Melbourne City is around the Flinder Street. We stayed in Little Collins street, which is just 5-7 min-walk to Flinder Station.
You can start you’re day by checking Hosier Lane Street Art, which is in the opposite of the Federation Square.
Besides the Hosier Lane, just a little walk, you will see St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Most of the tours do their pick ups here.
On the opposite side of St. Patricks’ Cathedral and Federation Square, you will find the Flinder Railway Station.
At the middle, there’s the tram stop where you can find the free city tour tram #35. This will take you around the city. Just like a hop on hop off thing.
Visited the State Library Victoria it the central library of Victoria located in Melbourne with some pretty amazing heritage interiors.
You can make your way to Queen Victoria Market to eat some or do some grocery or shop around.
Be sure to visit their National Gallery of Victoria because it’s free! and the arts are pretty cool. Not sure if it changes from time to time, depends on the event.
Going back to Flinder Station, you can wonder around Yarra River, there are some nice restaurants too around it.
There’s a lot of malls around the city, I also like going to QV mall and buying some bread in Bread Top and some snacks in Woolworths.
To cap the night off, just take some night shots of the city, ’cause it’s more beautiful with lights on everywhere ?

I have never been there but certainly a place filled with entertainments and beautiful buildings.

Melbourne looks like such a cool city! A couple of my friends lived there for awhile and they always made it sound like such a fun place to hang out. Hopefully I’ll make it to Aus myself soon and check it out!
I love your photos! Most especially of Hosier Lane Street Art! I think I would love to be there and take lots of pictures with the murals!

It’s always nice to know what free things you can do in a destination. Especially if there on your way to your next experience. Thanks for the ideas, I;ll definitely have to save it for my next trip there.
From the sound of it a visit should overlap with the evening in order to see the city at night. I’d love to go to Queen Victoria Market. I’m sure I’d enjoy that!
what a beautiful town – it seems to have a very “old world” flavor to it. How great that they offer free tram tour through the city. Thanks for sharing these amazing pictures – blessings!
Never been to Melbourne but we have family spread all over Australia and we do want to go sometime in the future. And I LOVE free things, they tend to be the best IMO.
