A Day Trip to the Great Ocean Road from Melbourne
From Sydney we flew to Melbourne to have a day trip to the Great Ocean Road from Melbourne. But since we’re not driving, we booked a tour that will take us there. We did the reverse itinerary, to avoid the crowd.
We met at St. Paul’s Cathedral for pick up around 7:00 am. It’s a long drive, so we got some nap time on the way and breakfast on our own expense after 2 hours on the road.
After another 30 mins of driving, we arrived at our first stop which is the 12 Apostles. Some facts that the tour guide told us, is that, it was never been 12 limestones, it’s only 9 limestones standing in the ocean. Then there was an erosion, causing it to be 8 limestones.
The view is really spectacular together with the wave in the ocean. So be aware that it is windy, and sometimes, it can get chilly.
After 1 hour in the 12 Apostles, time to head to our next spot which is the Loch Ard Gorge, which we were able to go down to see it more closely and you can also take your shoes off to feel the sand. And on the opposite side, you will see The Razorback.
Time to see the other 2 limestones in the 12 Apostles, closely. And this will be in the Gibson Steps. Unfortunately, I forgot to take a picture of the whole stairs.
We also had a quick stop to the Arch, before having some lunch, cause we’re pretty hungry at this time.
And time for lunch, so we had some pizza and some fish and chips.
After that good lunch, time to see the London Arch (formerly known as the London Bridge). The bridge collapse in 1990, leaving 2 tourists stranded. But they were rescued after some time.
Time to go back, so we had a nice nap again after lunch time. And before the day ends, we got to see some Kangaroos and Koalas too. It was tiring. but we’re glad to have some tour van that took us to the Great Ocean Road.

This is one of the drives I would really love to do when I visit Australia. There are so many amazing stops on the way. And the 12 Apostles are stunning to admire.
What stunning scenery and your photos capture it brilliantly. Wow. I particularly like the 12 Apostles, but all of it is amazing. I guess I need to add something else to my travel to-do list now.
I had no idea the 12 Apostles were never 12- or that they were only 9 but erosion led to the loss of one of them! They have always been on our bucket list and now I’m even more intrigued!
I have never been Australia . This article gives an idea why you must visit Australian coast in your lifetime. Thanks for sharing your experience. Keep alive the travel bug!!!
Love all of your photos! inspiring me to travel and explore Australia, particularly liked the 12 Apostles. I am adding this to my bucketlist.
This is bringing some amazing memories back! It’s a really good idea to do it the other way around to avoid the crowds. I remember though that they found some apostles hidden in the sea, not coming out like the other ones.
I grew up not far from here but haven’t been back for so long. Your post bought back lots of great memories, I’d love to visit again next time I’m back home.
Australia has been calling me since I visiting 20 years ago…. maybe it is time to pack my bags and go. The 12 Apostles are now on my Australia bucket list.
I’ve never been to Australia but this post makes me want to visit so much! Love all the photos, the 12 Apostles are such an iconic feature on along the great ocean road, would love to see them in real life!
Wow, some amazing pictures. That’s one road trip I’d love to do. We haven’t been to Australia yet but driving the Great Ocean Road would be a must when we eventually visit!
Hello!
I have just returned from New Zealand and it looks like I need to head back to Australia. What a beautiful post! And, breathtaking photos!
Well done!
Anna
What a beautiful scenery and your captured it brilliantly. Wow. I particularly like the 12 Apostles, and how it is not 12 but 9 and how it got eroded with time. It definitely going into my travel bucket list.
You’ve brought back some brilliant memories, as I did this drive decades back with my mum when she lived in Australia. It’s the kind of wild coast I love, and I remember her persuading me that I wasn’t really so scared of heights I couldn’t do the steps!
Doing the reverse trip is a great idea, we did this when we visited Petra. Seeing the 12 Apostles must have been amazing, they are so beautiful dotted along the coastline of Great Ocean Road. The London Arch looks quite prolific, shame about the people that needed to be rescued!
I’ve never been to Australia, but I know that the beaches must be really amazing. The 12 Apostles look just wonderful – I love the rough scenery a lot. However, since I’m afraid of heights, this might be a challenge for me.
The Great Ocean Road has been on my bucket list for ages. Australia’s still far away in the future for us, but we’re definitely going to visit one day
Your post revived my memories of Great Ocean road day trip from Melbourne. All the stops in between are worth and it is really world’s most wonderful road trip. Even taking a helicopter ride over the 12 Apostles is worth.
I really adore those 12 apostles. They are so stunning and really made the day. Absolutely worth visiting the place.
This looks like the most wonderful roadtrip, so many amazing photos 🙂 The nature in Australia looks incredible and I’m definitely adding the 12 Apostles to my bucket list now. Thank for your info!
